The Black Stag

Capturing the magic of the Scottish Highlands

View the Collection

I am based in the Scottish Highlands and paint the Highland countryside. I try to capture the ancient and unique magic which infuses this majestic landscape. Going hand in hand with the beautiful Highland scenery is the pure unspoiled light — the two elements combine to make enchanting panoramas.

I aim to paint something extraordinary that few photographers will be capable of photographing. All my prints are strictly limited in number and are available to buy.

Limited Edition Prints

Each painting captures a fleeting moment of Highland light — the Red Stag a timeless witness to Scotland's ancient, untamed beauty.

Giclee Fine Art Prints

Professionally produced on the Black Isle to the highest archival standard — second only to owning an original.

Archival Quality

These are Giclee prints — high-resolution reproductions using pigment-based inks on heavyweight watercolour paper. They are indistinguishable from the originals, with superior colour depth, vibrancy and longevity. These prints can last up to 400 years with proper care.

Limited Edition

Each print is strictly limited to an edition of only 100. Every single print is individually signed and numbered by the artist. Once an edition is sold out, it will not be reprinted. Owning a numbered print carries genuine collectible value.

Printed on the Black Isle

All prints are produced by professional printers on the Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands — the very heartland of the landscapes depicted. Printed on high-quality heavyweight watercolour stock, chosen to complement the texture and depth of the original acrylic paintings.

Mounting & Framing

Available unframed, mounted and ready to frame, or fully mounted and framed. The mount is an off-white neutral board. The frame is a complementary cream finish, carefully chosen to enhance the natural Highland tones without distracting from the artwork.

I bind together the elements of light, spectacular scenery, and the spiritual presence of the Red Stag to capture something of the unique and ancient magic of the Scottish Highlands.

I trained at Blackpool and Fylde College, completing a three-year HND course in Scientific and Natural History Illustration — one of the leading wildlife art courses in the world. During my studies, one of my paintings was chosen as Natural England's Christmas card, and I won a contract with Parken Zoo near Stockholm — one of Sweden's premier wildlife parks — where I illustrated information boards for their big cats, including their world-famous white tigers.

Since then, I have worked as a freelance illustrator on many varied commissions: for different companies, for the Armed Forces, and on private work. I also ran several successful art classes. More recently, I have concentrated on my own painting.

Much of my work now reflects the beauty and magic of the Scottish Highlands and its remarkable wildlife — principally the Red Stag. I paint in acrylics on a line and wash board (watercolour paper pressed onto board), and from each original I produce a strictly limited edition print run of only 100.

The paintings show various iconic Scottish landscapes lit by the spectacular and beautiful light of the Highland skies — all featuring the silhouette of the Scottish Red Stag.

I aim to paint something extraordinary — a moment that few photographers will ever be capable of capturing.
